“Bonaparte on St. Helena Island”

“Bonaparte on St. Helena Island”

- January 16, 1816
The first published engraving of Napoléon at St. Helena shows him standing in front of The Briars, the residence of William Balcombe, the East India Company agent. Napoléon became very fond of the family, particularly of 14-year-old Betsy, who, with the innocence of youth, treated him as an equal. She frequently pointed out that he cheated at cards.
