Memoirs and Correspondence of Madame Recamier

Fre e e-read of the memoirs here.

Okay, so after reading the few letters from Jean Baptiste/Charles Jean included in this memoir, I can understand that Desiree might have had reasons to be jealous of this relationship. Sex is one thing, infidelity in love is another.

Decide for yourself!

DESIREE : The Bestselling Story of Napoleon's First Love Annemarie Selinko Read by Nicole Quinn

Nicole Quinn's performance breathes new life into this moving and memorable story of Désirée Clary, Napoleon Bonaparte's first fiancée and lifelong friend. Presented as a series of diary entries over the course of her eventful life, Désirée's story not only sheds light on the life of a fascinating woman but also captures in haunting detail some of the century's most extraordinary personalities. Quinn admirably captures Désirée's unique voice at each stage of her life, from teenage petulance and crushing heartbreak to the confident tones of her eventual rise to royalty in the heyday of Napoleon's reign. While some secondary characters are occasionally difficult to distinguish, Quinn portrays Bonaparte and his colleagues with subtle but irresistible power, bringing listeners as close to the Great Emperor as Désirée herself. THE QUEEN OF LAST HOPES : The Story of Margaret of Anjou Susan Higginbotham Read by Nicole Quinn

With most of her life behind her, Margaret d'Anjou, deposed queen of England, recounts her life story from 1444 to her marriage to King Henry VI, focusing on her dealings with a country that despised her. Nicole Quinn's low-key delivery and elegant voice are ideal for sharing the fears and delights of the 14-year-old who leaves France to become England's queen for the purpose of cementing relations between the two countries. Quinn's accents are subtle and flawless, and she fully captures court intrigues and romances as well as Margaret's bitterness and dismay when the king becomes incapacitated. Although her men's voices tend to be gruff and whispery, all her characters remain credible. Susan Higginbotham offers a new look at the Wars of the Roses, and Quinn's performance is engaging.
