Amazon U.K. reviews
I know that most of the reviews are about the book being in German. They remind me that the book was first written in German, and then translated into many other languages.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for any historical fiction lover!, 10 Oct 2010

This review is from: Désirée. (Paperback)
In his memoirs, dictated while he was in exile on the island of St. Helena, Napoleon named his first love as Desiree Clary, a silk merchant's daughter from Marseilles. In the breathtaking novel simply titled Desiree, author Annemarie Selinko chronicles the life of the woman who was Napoleon's fiancee, a woman who rose from being a commoner to becoming a wife of a General to Queen of Sweden and Norway. As a little girl Desiree received a diary from her beloved father and through it she narrates her story. Desiree first meets Napoleon through his brother Joseph, who will later become her brother-in-law, and takes a fancy to the young and determined General. Even though their relationship would die young and he would break her heart, Napoleon and Desiree would remain in each other's lives until his quest for world domination ended in his exile to St. Helena.
Desiree is a mesmerizing look at the rise and fall of Napoleon told from the woman who first held his heart and knew him like no other. It is touching and beautifully written and no historical fiction readers' library is complete without this exceptional, un-put-down-able novel!

1.0 out of 5 stars The book is in German!, 1 Dec 2011

This review is from: Désirée. (Paperback)
For the very first time I am very, very disappointed with Amazon.co.uk.Only after ordering this book did I learn that this book is in German.
I think that a book in a foreign language should me marked in a special way, after all - when ordering a book in England, I am allowed to presume that the book is in English.

The fact that it is German should be made clear! It is so disappointing to wait or a book, and when it arrives it is in German.
1.0 out of 5 stars please read the reviews!!, 6 Jun 2011

I ordered this book and did not read the reviews before I ordered, otherwise I would have known from other readers experience that this book is written in German. Nowhere on the site, apart from the reviews, was this made obvious and I wish I had read the review before I bought, but I have never been misled by Amazon before and I have now paid the price. I will be returning the book and I am very, very disappointed.

When ordering a book in England, one might be forgiven for expecting the book to be written in English, especially as there was no mention anywhere that it might be in a foreign language. Unfortunately, the book delivered to me is in German and I am therefore unable to read it.Tuesday, August 14, 2012

I delivered the files - 66 chapters. What a great story!

I am almost done with this book and it is the best book i've EVER read. It's brought me through so many emotions. I've laughed at the characters and I've almost cried with Desiree in her despair and gotten ecstatic with her happiness. I'd reccomend this book to EVERYBODY!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is my favorite book of all times.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Desiree (Hardcover)
Desiree came alive on every page and my heart broke for her again and again. I read this when I was a young married wife. I had the opportunity to go to Sweden and walk on the property of her castle and remember how cold it was for her. I always thought of the terrible decision she had to make as a mother and have often wondered what I would have done. Napoleon became a very real person off the pages of history because of this book. What a joy to read this again. I have possession of my own copy that I found at a used bookstore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely excellent!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Desiree (Hardcover)
Desiree reminded me a little of Scarlett in Gone with the Wind -- except she was a much nicer person and was an actual historical figure who eventually became the Queen of Sweden. This is such an excellent book on so many levels that I'm surprised it has not been reprinted and a current movie made. It has all the elements of a great classic.

I just read this book for the first time and I fell in love. Now, it's as if I'm under its spell. Every night I reread parts. I only wish that I could own this beautiful, magical book! Please, someone, anyone, reprint it so that others may experience its wonder and fascination!
5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book as an 8 year old and still love it today.,

This review is from: Desiree (Hardcover)
I first read this when I was 8 and then again when I was 13. This was not only a great book about the French revolution, but also about life and how what we think we want is not always the best thing for us after all. I have tried to live my life by that sentiment and would really like a copy of this for my daughter to read. It was an absolutely briiliant book. Please someone print it once more for this generation!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Desiree (Hardcover)
This is the story of Napoleon's first love...Desiree. I think you have to be a teenager to read this- I was eleven. It was the 1953 version, so I don't know if this is the book everyone else seems to be talking about. If the second version is like the first, though, READ IT!!! I was lucky enough to find a copy for a dollar at a library sale, almost new then, but now I've read the cover off. If you like romance, you'll love this.

I loved it and I bawled buckets of tears. It tells so much about the struggles of a girl during the French Revolution and her fairytale ending. I was amazed that it was a true story. This is the best book for anyone of any age. |
